🏫 Georgetown ISD weighs delaying new schools

The Gist: Georgetown ISD leaders are discussing delaying the opening of the new elementary and middle school until 2027 due to budget concerns and slower enrollment growth. District officials said opening both schools this fall could create a $1.75 million shortfall, and delaying one or both campuses could help avoid cuts and make room for staff raises.

Why It Matters: There will definitely be mixed opinions, especially for the families most directly affected. But credit to the district for carefully weighing all options and keeping teacher and staff pay on the priority list, even when the budget is tight. There’s no easy answer here, but hopefully the conversation leads to the best long-term plan for students and helps Georgetown ISD keep great educators.

What’s Next: District leaders will continue budget workshops and town halls this spring, with a final decision expected after gathering more community input.

🚰 Lake Travis tunnels strengthen Round Rock’s water future

The Gist: The Brushy Creek Regional Utility Authority has completed all underground work on a new water delivery system beneath Lake Travis. Two large tunnels and a deep water intake will allow water to be pumped even when lake levels fall. The system replaces floating barges and will supply Round Rock, Cedar Park, and Leander.

Why It Matters: For Round Rock, this project unlocks up to 40.8 million additional gallons of water per day and adds long-term drought protection. It’s reassuring to know Round Rock is planning ahead as the city keeps growing.

🏘️ 425-home development planned for north Georgetown

The Gist: Georgetown City Council gave preliminary approval to an 85-acre residential and commercial project along Hwy. 195. Plans call for up to 425 homes, a mix of single-family, townhomes, and smaller cottage-style units, plus at least 10 acres of retail space. The layout is designed to be walkable, with trails, open space, and neighborhood amenities.

Why It Matters: This brings new housing options and nearby shopping to a less developed part of Georgetown.

What’s Next: City Council is set to consider final approval Jan. 27.

🛝 New playground takes shape at Old Settlers Park

The Gist: Construction is underway on the Joanne Land Playground at Old Settlers Park, funded by the voter-approved 2023 G.O. bond. The upgraded playground will be more than twice the size of the original 2017 structure and is built to handle heavy daily use. Features include modern play equipment, lighting for evening events, cooler-touch materials, rubber surfacing, and a separate area for younger kids.

Why It Matters: This is one of Round Rock’s busiest parks, and the new playground is designed to last longer and serve more families. It’s nice to see a well-loved spot getting a thoughtful upgrade!
