Georgetown ISD leaders are considering delaying the opening of a new elementary school and a new middle school as the district works to address a growing budget shortfall and slower enrollment growth.

District officials discussed the issue during a Jan. 12 board workshop, where Superintendent Devin Padavil outlined several cost saving scenarios tied to the timing of opening Elementary School No. 12 and Middle School No. 5.

Why the delay is being discussed

Both schools are currently scheduled to open in August near Patriot Way and SH 130, close to East View High School. Construction for the campuses was funded through the district’s 2024 bond election totaling $649 million.

Padavil said opening both schools as planned could result in a projected $1.75 million budget shortfall for the 2026–27 school year. That scenario would likely require budget cuts, larger class sizes and no pay raises for staff.

If the district delays opening the elementary school, the shortfall would drop to about $575,000. Delaying the middle school would instead create a projected $1.05 million surplus. Delaying both campuses could result in a $1.25 million surplus and allow the district to avoid cuts and possibly provide staff raises.

Georgetown ISD expects to see lower enrollment growth than previously projected. The district estimates 14,095 students for the 2026–27 school year, which is 384 fewer students than earlier projections. Because state funding is based on daily attendance, fewer students mean less revenue.

City officials also noted that new home construction and population growth in Georgetown have slowed compared to recent years.

What comes next

District leaders said budget discussions will continue through the spring, along with community input and possible town halls. The district may also consider a voter approval tax rate election this fall.

The school board has not made a final decision. Officials emphasized that all options remain under review as they work to balance financial stability with long term growth needs.
