A major upgrade gets underway

Construction has officially started on the new Joanne Land Playground at Old Settlers Park, marking another visible project funded through Round Rock’s voter-approved 2023 general obligation bond program.

The original playground opened in 2017 and quickly became one of the most heavily used play areas in the city. Although playgrounds in Round Rock’s park system are typically designed to last about 15 years, the Joanne Land Playground required frequent repairs due to its exceptionally high level of use.

City officials say the new playground is designed to better match that demand.

Larger design built for heavy use

The new Joanne Land Playground will be more than twice the size of the former structure and is being built with features intended for high-capacity use. Plans include a large, modern play structure along with poured-in-place rubber surfacing for durability and accessibility.

To improve comfort and usability, the playground will include plastic play components designed to reduce heat absorption. Integrated lighting is also part of the design, allowing the space to remain usable during evening concerts and special events held nearby.

Spaces for different age groups

In addition to the main play structure, the project includes a separate play area designed specifically for younger children. Swings will be located adjacent to the main playground, providing additional options for families with children of different ages.

The playground is situated near the recently completed amphitheater and pavilion area at Old Settlers Park, placing it within one of Round Rock’s most active recreational hubs.

Timeline for completion

Construction is expected to wrap up later this spring. Once finished, the new playground will restore a popular destination for families while offering a more durable, thoughtfully designed space that reflects how heavily Old Settlers Park is used year-round.

It is the kind of upgrade that shows how much Round Rock values places where the community gathers, plays, and spends time together.
