Round Rock continues to invest in trail connections and road improvements across the city. Several projects are in different stages, from early planning to active construction and recent completion. Here’s an overview of what residents can expect.
Upcoming projects
Heritage Trail East
This planned trail will link Mays Street to Georgetown Street by running through a future park along the north side of Brushy Creek. The project is currently in the permitting phase. No construction timeline has been announced. The estimated cost is 7.25 million dollars, funded through a mix of self financed construction funds and grants.
Kenney Fort Boulevard segments 5 and 6
This project will extend Kenney Fort Boulevard to University Boulevard. In late September, City Council approved the purchase of 3.7 acres of right of way for the next section of roadway. The project is now in the design phase. The land purchase cost is 500,000 dollars and is funded through sales tax revenue.
Ongoing projects
Lake Creek Trail
Work is underway on a 10 foot wide trail connecting Round Rock West Park to Centennial Plaza. A new bridge linking the trail on both sides of I 35 was installed in October. Construction began in 2023 and is expected to wrap up in early 2026. The project carries a 2.46 million dollar price tag and is funded by the 2023 bond.
Chisholm Trail South
This project includes pavement reconstruction, sidewalk upgrades, and drainage and utility improvements along Chisholm Trail Road between Sam Bass Road and RM 620. Pedestrian enhancements near the low water crossing by the Round Rock landmark are also included. Construction is scheduled from July 2025 through September 2026 and is funded by sales tax revenue at a cost of 4.26 million dollars.
Gattis School Road segment 6
The city is widening this stretch from four lanes to six lanes with a raised median between Via Sonoma Trail and Red Bud Lane. Council awarded the construction contract in November. Work is expected to run from late 2025 through late 2027. The project costs 20.4 million dollars and is funded by sales tax revenue.
Completed project
Heritage Trail West
Completed in January 2025, this one mile addition connects the west side of Round Rock to downtown through the Brushy Creek Trail System. The project cost 21 million dollars and was funded by a 2013 bond along with grant funds.
Together, these projects show how Round Rock is steadily expanding both mobility and outdoor access across the city.
