How It Works
The Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter has installed “Reunion Stations” at local businesses, providing anyone who finds a stray dog or cat with a quick way to check for a microchip ID. Each reader, mounted in repurposed metal stands, displays a nine- to 15-digit number linked to the pet’s registered owner. Users can then contact the owner directly or go through the chip manufacturer, depending on the information available.
The program began as a pilot outside the shelter’s Georgetown Services Center and is now expanding to multiple locations throughout Round Rock. Current stations are set up at Round Rock Yoga (106 S. Mays St.) and the Austin Pets Alive! thrift store (913 N. Interstate 35).
Community and Business Support
April Peiffer, the shelter’s community engagement coordinator, said the stations are designed to make it simple for anyone to take action when they encounter a lost pet. Being outdoors, the readers are accessible 24/7, ensuring the public can use them at any time.
Local businesses participating in the program see it as a small but meaningful way to support animal welfare. Derrick Ernst, director of retail operations at Austin Pets Alive!, said, “People often come in after finding a lost pet. Having these stations fits perfectly with our mission of rehoming animals.”
Checking Your Pet’s Microchip
Pet owners can also use the stations to ensure their own animals’ microchips are still working. Zelinda Yañez of Round Rock Yoga, a shelter volunteer, recommended, “It’s a good idea to check chips every now and then to make sure they’re active.”
