What the loan will support

Pflugerville is receiving a 176 million dollar loan through the Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act. City officials say the funding will help pay for a new wastewater treatment plant, upgrades to wastewater collection systems and improvements to water mains. The plan also includes work on the 54 inch Wilbarger Wastewater Interceptor, which is needed to manage higher flows in the Wilbarger and Cottonwood Basins as the area grows.

Why the project matters

City leaders noted that the federal support allows Pflugerville to move forward with essential improvements without placing a heavy financial burden on residents. Jeff Dunsworth, the city’s assistant director of utility engineering, said the loan will help the city provide reliable, long term service throughout its system. He described the ability to make sustainable water and wastewater improvements as a top priority for the community.

Previous improvements through the same program

This is not the first time Pflugerville has relied on this federal loan program. In recent years, the city secured roughly 200 million dollars for other large scale water projects. Those earlier loans allowed Pflugerville to expand its water treatment plant, increase capacity in its drinking water system, upsize major pipelines, add a secondary Colorado River raw water line and upgrade pump stations.

Looking ahead

The city expects the new loan to support continued growth while ensuring that water and wastewater systems remain dependable. With several large projects already underway, officials say the additional funding will allow Pflugerville to stay on track with long term infrastructure needs.

It is a meaningful boost for a city working hard to keep its services strong as the community grows.
