String light recycling

Georgetown residents can once again recycle old or broken holiday string lights for free from Dec. 1, 2025 through Jan. 30, 2026. The City is partnering with Texas Disposal Systems to run the program, which accepts string lights only. Items like inflatables, yard decorations, and other types of holiday lighting are not eligible.

Lights must be taken to one of four drop-off stations:
• Georgetown Municipal Complex, 300-1 Industrial Ave.
• Georgetown Public Library, 402 W. Eighth St.
• Georgetown Recreation Center, 1003 N. Austin Ave.
• Cowan Creek Amenity Center, 1433 Cool Spring Way in Sun City

Residents are asked not to place string lights in their recycling carts, since they can damage sorting equipment. Georgetown first introduced this program in 2017 and collected about 3,600 pounds of lights last year.

Tree, box, and wrapping paper recycling

Texas Disposal Systems customers within city limits can place natural Christmas trees at the curb on their regular yard trimmings day. Trees seven feet or shorter may be placed at the curb uncut. Longer trees should be cut into sections. All decorations must be removed. Artificial trees are not accepted.

Residents can look up their yard trimmings day through the Waste Wizard tool at texasdisposal.com, where they can also sign up for reminders and view holiday schedule changes.

Cardboard boxes and plain wrapping paper are recyclable. If carts are full, these items can be placed in a larger box next to the cart. Foil paper, bows, ribbon, and embellished wrapping paper are not recyclable. Plastic bags and cellophane wrap can be bundled inside a yellow bag the bag and placed in the recycling cart. Bags are available at the same locations listed above.

Additional drop off options

Christmas trees can also be taken to the City of Georgetown Transfer Station at 250 W. L. Walden Drive from Jan. 2 through Jan. 31 at no cost. Trees must be free of all decorations. Mulch made from recycled trees is available to residents year round. The Transfer Station is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., with holiday closures on Nov. 27 28, Dec. 24 25, and Jan. 1.

Georgetown’s seasonal programs offer residents an easy way to cut down on holiday waste and keep reusable materials out of the landfill.
