City outlines major investment in park restoration and safety
Georgetown Parks and Recreation has announced plans for more than $10 million in improvements to Blue Hole Park, a popular natural area along the San Gabriel River. The upgrades, discussed at a city council workshop on October 29, focus on revitalizing the park and protecting it from future flooding.
The plan incorporates community feedback and lessons learned from severe floods over the July 4 weekend, which caused more than $100,000 in damage. Parks and Recreation Director Kimberly Garrett, who has served the city for 20 years, said the flooding emphasized the need for resilient design. “We learned what survives and what doesn’t,” she said. “There’s new technology and engineering that can ensure those new features don’t get washed away.”
Enhancements designed for resilience and accessibility
Proposed improvements include expanded picnic areas, new parking, upgraded restrooms, and reinforced riverbanks to prevent erosion. The city also plans to add more preservation zones and nature-friendly spaces for visitors.
Georgetown currently has $7 million earmarked for the project, with remaining costs to be covered through phased development or adjusted funding. The total estimated cost is $10,153,381, which includes design, construction, and contingency expenses.
Timeline and community impact
Design work is expected to begin in 2026, with construction starting in early 2027. City leaders said the project will make Blue Hole Park safer, more accessible, and better suited for families.
Resident Allyson Plantz said she welcomes the investment. “I love to see investment in gems like this,” she said. “I hope whatever they’re doing is a flood-proof plan, because that’s something that happens all the time.”
Garrett added that the goal is to create a lasting destination for residents and visitors alike. “The enhancements are really just to make it more family-friendly, to bring people to the park and make it a destination,” she said.
