Direct Express Service

The new routes provide nonstop service from Smithville/Bastrop and Georgetown/Round Rock into downtown Austin, offering a convenient alternative for commuters traveling along some of the region’s busiest corridors.

Purpose and Funding

These commuter routes are funded through the Climate Pollution Reduction Grant (CPRG) program and aim to ease congestion and lower vehicle emissions on Hwy-71, Hwy-290, and I-35. To encourage riders to give public transit a try, CARTS will offer free rides for a limited period.

The initiative is part of a broader regional effort, led by Austin Transportation and Public Works, supported with a $47.9 million EPA award. The program’s goals include keeping traffic moving amid rapid population growth and construction while improving air quality and overall commute reliability.

Future Expansion

CARTS plans to add a third commuter route along Hwy-290 out of Elgin in June 2026, further expanding transit options in Central Texas’ most congested areas.

“These routes are about reducing the number of cars on the road and offering commuters a smarter, stress-free option,” said CARTS General Manager Dave Marsh. “One bus can take dozens of single-occupancy vehicles off the highway. If you’re tired of traffic, this is your exit ramp.”
