A local treasure with deep roots

At 103 East St, Hutto, Hutto General Store has been part of the community for decades. What began in 1988 as Creative Touch, an interior decorating business founded by Janet Widmer, has grown into a family-run gift and candy destination. Janet’s son, Matt Widmer, now leads the shop with his sister Kim Kubala, keeping the spirit of their mom’s vision alive while adding their own touches.

The historic 1891 building they call home adds even more charm, with its past as a bank and doctor’s office making every visit feel like a step back in time.

Gifts, candy, and more to explore

Inside, shoppers will find over 2,000 sq. ft. of treasures. Two floors are packed with thoughtful finds, from purses, jewelry, and seasonal décor to children’s toys and men’s items. Brands like Consuela, Hobo, Nora Fleming, and Ronaldo share space with quirky gifts, Texas-inspired keepsakes, and specialty food items.

In 2011, the family added a candy counter, and today it’s a centerpiece of the store. Bulk candies, Jelly Belly favorites, novelty sweets, and hand-dipped chocolates from Fredericksburg tempt both kids and adults, while specialty sodas and truffles make it hard to leave empty-handed. Gift cards are available too, making it an easy go-to for any occasion.

A welcoming shopping experience

The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, with staff happy to let you browse at your own pace. Locals stop in for unique gifts, visitors come for the nostalgia of an old-fashioned candy shop, and everyone leaves with something that feels special. Whether you’re shopping for a wedding gift, a seasonal decoration, or just a bag of sweets, the store is a true Hutto gem.
