🍿 A family movie day for under $25

I took the kiddos to Film Alley again last week, and it was the perfect rainy-day escape. We saw Minions & Monsters, and I have to admit, it exceeded my expectations!

Film Alley took over the former City Lights location in Georgetown and is run by Schulman Theatres, a Texas family-owned company. I love supporting a family business, especially when the tickets are some of the most affordable we’ve found nearby. It was under $25 for all three of us!

Of course, we never leave without a trip to the arcade, which is always a fun way to cap off the outing. They also have bowling and a restaurant, so you can easily turn a movie into a full afternoon with the family.

The Gist: Georgetown is planning a $525,000 refresh of Chautauqua Park, with construction expected to begin in November. The plans include a new playground, swings, an upgraded pavilion, a renovated restroom, a resurfaced basketball court and more open green space.

Why It Matters: Chautauqua Park is already a favorite spot for local families, and these updates could make it even easier to spend an afternoon there. A better playground, more room to picnic and freshened-up amenities will give neighbors a nicer place to meet up, let the kids play and enjoy time outside together.

The Gist: Round Rock ISD is launching its new Virtual Academy this fall, offering more than 50 online courses for students across Texas. The program already has about 130 students enrolled, with the district hoping to reach around 300 students next school year.

Why It Matters: If your child has ever needed more flexibility around sports, activities, or family schedules, this gives local families another option. Round Rock ISD’s Virtual Academy lets students learn online while staying connected to the district, with AP, honors, and dual credit classes available.

The Gist: PickleTex has opened in Georgetown near the Liberty Hill border, giving local players nine covered outdoor courts to enjoy. They offer court rentals, open play, clinics, coaching and memberships, so there’s something for everyone from first-timers to regular players.

Why It Matters: Pickleball keeps growing around here, and this gives neighbors another easy place to meet up, move a little and have fun close to home. The covered courts are a big plus during Texas heat, especially when you want to play without spending the whole game in direct sun.

Da’s Thai Cuisine opened its Hutto location in March, bringing the Thai favorites that first earned the restaurant a following as a Round Rock food truck and later at its Round Rock storefront. Owners Ronnie and Seeda also gave the restaurant a personal touch with its name, inspired by Seeda’s nickname, “Da.”

The menu includes favorites like pineapple fried rice, pad Thai, tom yum soup, papaya salad, curries and mango sticky rice. Several vegan options, a kids menu and a convenient drive-thru make it an easy choice for the whole family.
