Our kiddos go back to school tomorrow, and I’m just not ready.

We had one of those summers I wish I could put on repeat. I’m lucky enough to have two kids who are genuinely best friends, who can disappear into their own little world and play together for hours. I know these long summer days with both of them home won’t last forever, which makes letting this one go especially hard.

But a new school year is here, and we’re incredibly lucky to send our kids to schools filled with teachers who will love them, challenge them and help them grow. So I’m trying to hold the sadness and the gratitude at the same time.

To all the teachers heading into a new school year, I hope it’s a wonderful one. To all the parents, I hope your kids have their best year yet. And to everyone else, may the school traffic be ever in your favor!

The Gist: Williamson County commissioners approved an additional $2 million for the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter expansion. The funding will help add 12 dog kennels, upgrade kennel materials and expand housing for animals at the shelter. Construction is expected to begin next year.

Why It Matters: Anyone who has ever visited or adopted from a shelter knows how quickly space can fill up. These upgrades should give the shelter more breathing room to care for animals, while using sturdier materials that are built to last. It’s not an immediate fix, but it’s a meaningful investment in making sure the shelter has more room and better facilities as the county continues to grow.

The Gist: Paris Baguette opened its first Georgetown location Aug. 14 at 1310 W. University Ave., bringing fresh-baked breads, pastries, cakes, coffee and savory options like sandwiches to town.

Why It Matters: A new bakery is always a nice addition, especially when it works for everything from a quick coffee and pastry to picking up a cake or something special for the family. And with its spot along busy University Avenue, it’s an easy one to keep in mind when you’re already out and about.

The Gist: Two new food spots are taking shape nearby. Chocolate Bash, a dessert shop known for crepes, waffles, shakes and chocolate-covered treats, is expected to begin construction Sept. 1 at Stone Hill Town Center in Pflugerville, with work planned through Feb. 5.

In downtown Round Rock, locally owned Bed Rock Breakfast & Bar is targeting an August opening on Main Street. The restaurant plans to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, giving downtown another all-day option rather than just a morning café or dinner spot.

Why It Matters: Whether you’re craving something sweet or looking for a new downtown meal, both give locals something new to watch for. Chocolate Bash will be the chain’s first Texas location, while Bed Rock brings another locally owned restaurant to Main Street and could become an easy stop throughout the day.

Bella Donuts is a new neighborhood stop for fresh donuts, kolaches, croissant sandwiches, smoothies, coffee and other drinks. The donuts are soft and fluffy, with the glazed and red velvet varieties getting plenty of love.

The menu also includes several kolache options, including a spicy boudin version, plus a spicy ham and cheese croissant. It’s an easy spot to grab a quick breakfast, coffee or something sweet on the go.

Sweet Irene’s is coming to downtown Round Rock with women’s and children’s clothing, candles, jewelry and home décor. Named after the owner’s grandmother, the boutique will have a feminine style inspired by old Hollywood and Palm Springs.

The shop will also carry some items from local vendors and plans to host sip-and-shop nights after opening. Sweet Irene’s is expected to open later this month or early September, depending on construction.
