District celebrates statewide honors for counseling excellence
Three Round Rock ISD campuses have been recognized among the 2025 Lone Star Award winners by the Lone Star State School Counselor Association (LSSSCA), highlighting the district’s continued leadership in student guidance and mental health support.
Great Oaks Elementary earned a Silver Award, CD Fulkes Middle School received the Rising Star designation, and Redbud Elementary achieved Bronze status. The Lone Star Awards honor schools that deliver comprehensive, data-driven counseling programs aligned with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model.
Each application undergoes a rigorous review process, evaluating how campuses set measurable goals and implement best practices to improve student outcomes throughout the year.
Individual counselor honored with top state distinction
In addition to campus awards, Marisa Cano, counselor at Deerpark Middle School, received the Presidential Award, one of the highest individual recognitions given by LSSSCA. The honor highlights Cano’s leadership, innovation, and lasting impact on the counseling profession.
“There are so many school counselors doing amazing things in the state of Texas,” Cano said. “Much of our work happens behind the scenes, so to be recognized by the LSSSCA president is truly an honor.”
Focus on student success and holistic development
Steve Clark, Round Rock ISD’s Director of Counseling Services, said the awards reflect the district’s deep commitment to meeting every student’s academic, social, and emotional needs. “Counselors don’t just fix problems,” he said. “They implement proactive, data-driven programs that teach life skills, resilience, and self-advocacy while connecting academic planning to future goals.”
District officials said these honors reaffirm Round Rock ISD’s ongoing investment in building comprehensive counseling programs that foster confidence, belonging, and long-term achievement for all students.
