Major Transportation Corridor Set for Transformation
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has unveiled plans for a significant expansion of Interstate 35 between Georgetown and Round Rock. The ambitious project will address growing congestion along one of Central Texas's busiest transportation corridors as both communities continue to experience rapid population growth.
Construction will focus on the 15-mile stretch from SH 29/University Avenue in Georgetown to SH 45 North in Round Rock. TxDOT officials cite increasing traffic volumes and projected population growth as primary factors driving the expansion effort.
New HOV Lanes to Improve Traffic Flow
The centerpiece of the expansion includes adding two non-tolled high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes in each direction. These dedicated lanes will serve vehicles carrying multiple passengers, encouraging carpooling and reducing single-occupancy vehicles on the roadway.
Unlike previous regional transportation projects, the new lanes will not include toll collection, following policy changes at the state level regarding transportation funding. The HOV designation requires vehicles to carry at least two occupants during peak hours to access the lanes.
Additional Infrastructure Improvements
Beyond the new HOV lanes, the project encompasses several additional infrastructure enhancements:
New flyover ramps at the I-35 and SH 45 North interchange will improve traffic flow at one of the area's most congested intersections. The design includes reconfigured entrance and exit ramps throughout the corridor to improve safety and reduce weaving movements.
Several bridges crossing I-35 will undergo reconstruction to accommodate the wider roadway and meet current design standards. The expanded bridges will feature increased clearance heights and improved structural elements.
Pedestrians and cyclists will benefit from new shared-use paths running parallel to the highway, creating safer non-vehicular transportation options between the communities.
Construction Timeline and Community Impact
TxDOT anticipates construction to begin in early 2026, with completion projected for late 2029. The multi-year construction timeline reflects the project's scope and complexity.
Residents should expect periodic lane closures and traffic pattern changes throughout the construction period. TxDOT plans to maintain the current number of general-purpose lanes during peak travel hours to minimize disruption.
